President's Letter

Dear Leominster Youth Soccer Parents/Guardians and Volunteers,

I would like to take this opportunity to update everyone on the current state of the Leominster Youth Soccer Association. LYS was started in the early 1980’s by a group of parents and became a legal Massachusetts non-profit organization in 1986. From our humble beginnings with Frank Worthley and his Chevy Blazer behind the Leominster High School fields on Exchange St., to the wonderful facility at Samoset field that we have leased from the City of Leominster for over 25 years, we have a great history.

The mission of LYS is to provide a happy, safe, affordable soccer learning for the girls and boys of the city of Leominster. Currently there are approximately 175 intown players and approximately 275 travel players participating in the Nashoba Valley Youth Soccer League, under the guidelines of the Massachusetts Youth Soccer Association, all of which are under the umbrella of the United States Soccer Federation.

The current LYS board consists of twelve very dedicated volunteers who have strived to control the cost of registration, uniforms, and other fees, while budgeting for league fees and referees, maintaining a cost -effective program, updating coaches on rules and regulations, representing LYS at regional meetings, and managing programs, scheduling and fields.

I have been involved with LYS for over thirty years coach, referee director and, for the last six years, Board President. Recently, the Board has lost some very significant volunteers in positions and roles that are vital to keeping LYS running smoothly. Many have decided to resign, after years of service, as their children are no longer participating in LYS soccer programs. We have a few others, me included, that are completing current terms of service which expire November 30, 2019.

The LYS Board is now at a transitional period which has reached a crisis, but not a catastrophic, level as we are in dire need of new faces and fresh blood to insure continued, seamless provision of service to the City of Leominster and the soccer families who benefit from this program.

Therefore, we are reaching out to every parent, grandparent, guardian and any soccer enthusiast interested in volunteering for this amazing organization and asking them to consider volunteering. Many of these roles require just a few hours a month, each season (Spring & Fall), and attendance at the once-monthly board meetings. Flexibility is one of our greatest assets, and meetings can be adjusted to accommodate the majority’s needs.

Individuals willing to volunteer must pass a CORI check.

We want to ensure that all kids can continue to enjoy the LYS programs. Please contact any current Board member with questions, or if you are interested in assisting in any role. We can provide job descriptions and address any of your concerns.
